Vinyl tile, often referred to as Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) or Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), is a type of resilient flooring made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin. It is popular in both residential and commercial settings due to its durability, affordability, and ease of maintenance.
There are two main types:
Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT):
- Material: Made from a mixture of PVC and limestone fillers.
- Durability: Very durable but requires regular maintenance, including sealing and waxing to maintain its appearance.
- Uses: Often found in high-traffic areas like schools, hospitals, and retail spaces due to its resilience and long life.
- Appearance: Usually comes in solid colors or simple patterns.
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT):
- Material: Higher-quality vinyl, with layers including a design layer and a wear layer.
- Durability: More durable than standard vinyl and often features a thick wear layer for better resistance to scratches and dents.
- Uses: Common in residential applications as well as commercial spaces.
- Appearance: LVT is designed to mimic natural materials like stone, wood, or ceramic, often with detailed textures and finishes that make it look very realistic.
Both types of vinyl tile are typically water-resistant, making them ideal for areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. They are also easy to install, and many LVT options come with a click-and-lock system for DIY installation.
