The Carpet Tile Count Estimator: Number of Carpet Tiles for Room with Squared Bump-out calculator computes the number of carpet tiles and the amount of adhesive needed to cover an area or room with a squared bump-out based on the area's dimensions and the size of the tiles specified.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (L) Area Length
  • (W) Area Width
  • (BW) Bump-out Width
  • (BD) Bump-out Depth
  • (TW) Tile Width
  • (TL) Tile Length
  • (SM) Safety Margin (percent added to estimate)

Tile Count (TC): The calculator returns the number of tiles required to cover the area. The calculator also returns:

  • (A) Square Feet of Area
  • (CA) Quarts of Carpet Tile Adhesive (Hi - Low Range)

The Math Science

This calculator computes the number of carpet tiles as follows:

  1. computing the total area of room with squared bump-out
  2. dividing the total area by the unit dimension of the selected tile.
  3. the safety margin factor is applied (default 10% to account for partial cuts and broken tiles)
  4. the number is rounded up

Adhesive Requirement

When not using self-adhesive tiles, Carpet Adhesive may be required.  The Carpet Adhesive range is the low to high range of adhesive requirements for the area based on manufacturer recommendations that a quart of adhesive covers between 20 and 30 square feet per quart.
