Hurricane Matthew and Sandbagging for Flood Protection

Hurricane Matthew now looks like it's heading toward the U.S. East Coast. Furthermore, some of the/attachments/022ead16-f145-11e9-8682-bc764e2038f2/SandbagDoor.png Simple step prevents damage. East coast is already saturated in water from recent rains. This could be a serious flooding event.
With the rains coming in only a few days, sandbagging in the next few days is probably the only feasible flooding prevention that can be done in so little time.

Whether it's a few sandbags in your basement window-well or levee to keep the creek from flooding your yard, the Sandbag Wall Calculator (below) can help.  This free calculator featurs a terrific article by Dr.  Keneth Hellevang on how to build a sandbag wall (dike) and all of his formulas embedded in the calculator for easy use.   It also has links to videos on how to appropriately fill and lay sandbags.  The calculators will tell you:

  • how many sangbags you need for a levee or simple wall
  • how much sand you need for the sandbags, and
  • how long it might take to build the sandbag wall based on its dimensions and the amount of help (workers).

Please share this with whatever friends and family you may have that could benefit from a flooding prevention effort.
