This collection of calculators has volume, total capacity weight and load weight calculators for shipping or trucking containers with different geometric shapes including the following:

• Conic Cylinder:  This is a common configuration for the transport of liquid ranging from milk to diesel fuel.
• Spherocylinders (Capsule):  This is the common configuration of some liquids and many gases (e.g. liquid propane)
• Rectangular Box:  This is often the approximate shape of certain train cars, the bed of pickup truck and the bed of many large trucks (e.g. coal trucks).
• Spherical:  This is typically reserved for liquids.

For each of these shaped containers, this calculator has formulas for their:
   Rectangular Box Load of Sand

• Total volume:  This is based on their shape and their dimensions.  You will notice that these are often the combination of common shapes (box, cylinder, cone, sphere)
• Total Load Weight:  This is simply the total volume which is a cubic measurement (e.g. cubic feet or meters) times the density of the substance to be transported.  For convenience, vCalc has provided a substantial library of common mean densities of substance ranging from chemicals, minerals, metals, woods, agriculture products, gases, oils, liquids and types of earth.  
• Load Weight: This allows the user to compute the load weight when the load is at less than capacity

  • Total or Partial Load Weight (Click HERE) - For the total load weight, simply indicated the same value for the measure depth (D) of the substance to equal twice the radius (R) of the container.  (See diagram)

Mean Density

The mean density of a substance is the average mass (weight) of a substance in its most common form and at normal temperatures.  For the purposes of this set of calculators, we will not enter the minutia of physics and chemistry and use the approximate mean densities most frequently observed in the transportation and shipping of common substances.  NOTE: all value of volume and mean density should be verified elsewhere before employing these calculations for anything involving risks to life, limb or material assets.

For example, the mean density of bituminous coal is 793 kg/m³ and the mean density of water is 1,000 kg/m³.

• mD - short for mean Denisty.
• `muD`  - `mu` is the symbol for the Greek letter mu and is often used to indicate the average of something.
