This discussion of solar technology covers the following topics and will have the goal to explain how to identify your solar technology needs, should you choose to employ solar panels as a renewable energy source in your home:

Commercial solar technology has evolved to the point that the interfaces, the connectors, and the solar energy generating components are fairly standardized.  The component connectors are as standardized as the wall socket you would buy to replace a socket in your living room.

With the simple, basic AC and DC current/voltage/power physics equations housed in vCalc, you can understand how to size and design your Solar Power System.  Even if you don't know how a Watt relates to voltage, we'll show you the simple equations to form that basic knowledge of electricity and how to design a working, compatible Solar Power System.

Solar as an Alternative

Solar Power is an alternative to other power sources. There is a cost in initial installation of the solar panels but once installed it creates electricity indefinitely from the Sun's free, radiant  energy.  Some of the earliest use of Solar technology was in space-based, orbiting satellites where use of fossil fuels to provide energy was not possible. In today's world it is know that we will exhaust the Earth's supply of non-replenishable fossil energy sources and so alternatives must be persued.

The figure below shows a number of power sources available today, most of which have been developed precisely because they are renewable resources.
