The Stone Weight calculator converts mass and weight to the British stone weight unit and vice versa.

  • kg-to-Stone lets you enter any mass (kilograms is the default) and it converts it to stone
  • Stone-to-kg lets you enter a weight in stone and returns the equivalent in kilograms.  However, you can automatically convert the kilograms to other mass or weight units via the pull-down menu.

Stone Weight Unit

The stone is a traditional British unit of weight that is still commonly used in the United Kingdom and Ireland, particularly for measuring body weight. The abbreviation for stone is st.

Key Facts About the Stone Unit:

  • 1 stone (st) = 14 pounds (lbs) in the Imperial system.
  • It is equivalent to 6.35 kilograms (kg) in the metric system.
  • The stone is not widely used outside the UK and Ireland but is familiar in Commonwealth countries.

Example Usage:

If someone says they weigh "11 stone," it means their weight is: 11×14=154 pounds or approximately 70 kg.

Origins of the Stone Unit

The stone as a weight unit dates back to ancient times when stones were commonly used as standardized weights for trade and commerce. Different regions historically used stones of varying weights depending on the goods being measured.

The modern definition of 14 pounds for a stone was established in England in the late 14th century during the reign of Edward III. It became a legal standard and was later adopted into the Imperial system.

Fun Fact

In sports like boxing and horse racing, weights are often reported in stones and pounds (e.g., 12 stone 6 pounds = 12×14+6=174 lbs) for a more precise measurement.
