This data set contains the standard polepiece spacing which defines the standard sizes of guitar pickups. The idea for using this data set in vCalc is to make the polepiece spacings available to equations which may be used to compute design parameters for guitar design. See the forums for using data set data in equations.
Standard pickup sizes are defined by the string spacing between the polepieces of the pickups and are measured as the span across all the strings. So this data set provides polepiece spacing in two forms
See these pickups and other examples at Wikipedia Article
The polepiece six string span distance is also called the "E-to-E" spacing.
Most guitar designs cause the strings to run non-parallel, being closer at the nut and separated by greater distance at the bridge. Depending on where pickups are placed the spacing of the polepieces may then vary to fit the string orientation.
