The Pressure from Energy and Volume calculator computes the pressure (P) from an amount of energy exerted on a volume.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (E) This is the energy expended
  • (V) This is the volume absorbing the energy.

Pressure: The pressure (P) is returned in pascals.  However, this can be automatically converted to other pressure units (e.g. inches of mercury) via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for pressure from force and area is:

p = F/A

where:

  • p is the pressure,
  • F is the normal force,
  • A is the area of the surface on contact.

However, if you multiply both the numerator and denominator by a length or distance (d), the units change to energy(work) over volume, and the formula for pressure based on energy and volume is:

p =  (F * d) /(A *d)    = E/V
