The Gabion Basket Wall calculator computes the number of gabion baskets and total volume of stone needed for a gabion basket wall.

Gabion Basket Wall (GW): The calculator returns the volume of stone for the gabion basket wall.  It also returns the following:

  • (nB)Total Number of Gabion Baskets
  • (nR)Number of Rows of Gabion Baskets
  • (nPR) Number of Baskets per Row
  • (nD) Number of Baskets Deep per Row

The Math / Science

The Gabion Wall calculator computes the volume of the wall.  It then computes the number of baskets required.  Note: number of baskets are rounded up for each dimension.  If the number of rows or number of baskets deep are not correct, confirm that the dimensions are not causing rounding-up issues. 


A Retention Wall is a vertical or diagonal wall structure used to retain soil or water at an elevated height on one side of the wall, keeping it above the natural level that the soil or water would achieve.  Retention walls are used to create relatively flat areas such as roads or gardens that are cut into a hillside. Retention walls are also used as levees to keep water out of an area.  The soil and moisture on one side of the wall exerts pressure (stress) on the wall.  This is why the materials used must be appropriate for the application in both density and porosity.
