The Wang Hihara Unified Body Surface Area calculator/attachments/27a0dc3e-183b-11e6-9770-bc764e2038f2/HeightWeight.png computes the body surface area of  an animal or human based on the animal's volume(V) and length(L) and the Wang Hihara formula (below).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose your preferred weight and height units and enter the following:

  • (L) The length of the person or animal.
  • (V) The volume of the person or animal

BSA: The BSA is computed in square meters (m²).  However, this can be automatically converted into other area units via the pull-down menu.

General Information

The Wang Hihara formula for the body surface area of animals and humans is as follows:
                        BSA=9πVL
BSA is used in physiology and medicine for both humans and animals.  The default input units are meters for length and cubic meters for volume, and meters squared (m2) for the BSA.  However, the calculator provides automatic conversions for both the inputs and outputs to other (e.g. English) units via the pull-down menus.  To change to English units, click on the button at the right side of the length (L) input field with m and scroll down to another unit such as inches.  You can then enter the length in inches and the conversion will be made for you.  You can do the same for volume (V) by clicking on the m3 field and scroll down to liters or gallons.  Again the conversion will be made for you.

Demographics

The mean (average) body surface areas for different demographics are listed below.  To compare a BSA with one of these click HERE:

  • 0.25 m²- Neonate
  • 0.5 m² - 2 Year Old Child
  • 1.07 m²  - 9 Year Old Child
  • 1.14 m²  - 10 Year Old Child
  • 1.33 m² - 12 to 13 Year Old Child
  • 1.6 m²  - Woman
  • 1.9 m² - Man
