The Velocity of Efflux (Torricelli's Law) calculator computes the velocity of fluid out of the bottom of a tank based on the height of water in the tank.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (h) Height of Water in Tank

Velocity of Efflux (v): The velocity is returned meters per second.  However, these can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Velocity of Efflux (Torricelli's Law) equation computes the velocity of fluid from a tank. Torricelli's Law states that the Velocity of Efflux of a fluid through a sharp-edged hole at he bottom of a tank filled to depth h is the same as the speed that a body (in this case a drop of water) would acquire in falling freely from a height.

v=2gh

where:

  • g = acceleration due to gravity
  • h = height
  • v = velocity
