The Concrete Mix calculator computes volume and weight of cement, sand, gravel and water requires to make a volume of concrete.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (VVolume of Concrete

Concrete Mix (CMX): The calculator returns the following:

  • (vCM) Volume of Cement in cubic yards (yd³)
  • (wtCM) Weight of Dry Cement in pounds (lb)
  • (vSD) Volume of Sand in cubic yards (yd³)
  • (wtSD) Weight of Dry Sand in pounds (lb)
  • (vGV) Volume of Gravel in cubic yards (yd³)
  • (wtGV) Weight of Dry Gravel in pounds or tons (lb or ton US)
  • (vWT) Volume of Water in gallon (gal)
  • (wtSD) Weight of Water in pounds or tons (lb or ton US)

Note: Units can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Concrete Mix equation computes the volume of cement, gravel and sand to make concrete mix based on the ratio:

  • 4 parts gravel
  • 2 parts sand
  • 1 part cement

It uses these ratios to compute individual volumes.  It then applies the mean density of dry grave, sand and cement to compute the matching weight.

Lastly, i uses 39.375 gallons of water per cubic yard of concrete to compute the volume of water, and then 998.2 kg/m3 density of water to compute the weight of water.
