The extended debye-huckle equation calculates the activity coefficient. An activity coefficient measures the behavior of ions in solution that do not behave ideally. In ideal solutions, it is assumed that the interaction between the particles are insignificant and do not contribute to the equilibrium. In non-ideal solutions, ionic atmosphere and ion size are taken in to the consideration of an equilibrium.

Description

The extended debye-huckle equation is

         logγ=-0.51z2μ121+αμ12305

where

  • loggamma is the activity coefficient
  • z is the charge of the ions
  • mu is the ionic strengthof the salt in units of (mol/L)
  • gamma is the activity coefficient
  • alpha is the ionic radii in units of (pm), a full list of ionic radii can be found here.

* The above equation is already solved for gamma.
