hf=fDLDV22g
(fD)Darcy friction factor
(L)Pipe length
(D)Diameter of pipe
(V)Average fluid flow velocity

The Darcy-Weisbach (head loss) calculator computes the head loss of fluid based on a friction factor, the length and diameter of a pipe, velocity of fluid and the acceleration due to gravity.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (fD) Friction Factor
  • (L) Length of pipe
  • (D) Diameter of pipe
  • (V) Average velocity of fluid

Head Loss (hf):  The calculator returns the head loss in meters.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Darcy-Weisbach (head loss) equation is  used in fluid dynamics to relate the fluid pressure (known as head) loss experienced due to friction as the fluid moves through a length of pipe.  The measurement depends on a dimensionless friction factor known as the Darcy friction factor.  This equation will take the friction factor as input and leave the solving for the friction factor to another equation.    The Darcy-Weisbach (head loss) equation is:

      hf= fDLDV22g

where:

  • hf = Head Loss
  • fD = Friction Factor
  • L = Length of pipe
  • D = Diameter of pipe
  • V = Average velocity of fluid
  • g = Acceleration due to gravity
