The Epworth Sleepiness Scale calculator computes the level of sleepiness based on a sample of assessments under different circumstances.  

INSTRUCTIONS: For each life event, choose how like it is that you'll doze off as follows:

  • No chance
  • Slight chance
  • Moderate chance
  • High chance

The typical life events are:

  • Sitting and reading during normal waking hours, and not to fall asleep at bed-time.
  • TV watching during normal waking hours.
  • Sitting still in public such as a waiting room or at a movie,   
  • When you are a passenger in a car for more than an hour.
  • When lying down to rest in the afternoon. 
  • When relaxed and talking to someone.   
  • When sitting relaxed after a no-alcohol lunch.
  • When stopped in a car in traffic.

The Math / Science

Interpret the Epworth Sleepiness Scale as follows:

  • (0 to  7) - It is unlikely you are abnormally sleepy.
  • (8 to 9) - You have an average amount of sleepiness.
  • (10 to 15) - You possibly have excessive sleepiness. Consider medical attention.
  • (16 to 24) - You have excessive sleepiness. Seek medical attention.
