One standard square bail of straw covers approximately 150 ft2 of land deep enough to suppress weeds as mulch.  This is based on info from the book Five Acres and independence by M.G. Kains, where he states that 500lbs of straw can mulch 2,000 ft2.  With a square bail weighing between 30 lb and 40 lb, this number (150 ft2) is derived.

This value is used as follows:

  • Mulching With Straw (Rectangle): Enter the length (L) and width (W) of the rectangular area and it will estimate the number of bales of straw needed to mulch the area with straw.
  • Mulching With Straw (Irregular): Enter the length of the four sides (a,b,c,d) and the length of the diagonal (D) of the irregular four sided area and it will estimate the number of bales of straw needed to mulch the area with straw.
