The Adjusted Retention Time calculator computes the time it takes for retained solute to travel through the length of the column.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (tr) Retention Time
  • (tm) Minimum Time

Adjusted Retention Time (tr):  The calculator returns the time in seconds.  However this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The adjusted retention time equation calculates the time it takes for retained solute to travel through the length of the column. The equation is commonly used in chromatography, for separation of substances. In this equation, the retention time is the retention time of the solute of interest, the minimum time is the retention time of unretained solute.

The adjusted retention time equation is

    • tr' = tr - tm

where

  • tr' is adjusted retention time
  • tr is retention time
  • tm is minimum time
