The Archimedes Number calculator computes the Archimedes number based on the acceleration of the local field, the length of body, density of fluid and body and the dynamic viscosity.  Archimedes number is the ratio of gravitational forces to viscous forces and the form.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

Archimedes Number(Ar): The calculator returns the number as a real.

The Math / Science

The Archimedes number is used to determine the motion of fluids due to density differences. It is a dimensionless number defined as a ratio of external forces to internal viscous forces.  The formula for Achimedes Number is:

                Ar=gL3ρl(ρρl)μ2

where:

  • Ar = Archimedes Number
  • g = local external field such as acceleration due to gravity (g).
  • L = characteristic length of body
  • ρl = density of the fluid
  • ρ = density of the body
  • μ = dynamic viscosity
