The Heat Energy to Change Temperature of Material calculator computes the amount of energy needed to change the temperature of a material based on the mass, specific heat and desired change in temperature.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (C)  Specific Heat of Material
  • (m)  Mass of Object
  • (ΔT)  Change in Temperature

Heat Energy (Q):  The energy is returned in Joules. However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units (e.g. calories) via the pull-down menu. To lookup the specific heat of many materialsCLICK HERE

The Math / Science

The formula for specific heat using change in temperature is:

   Q =CmΔT

where:

  • Q = Energy Required
  • C = Specific Heat
  • m = mass of object
  • ΔT = Change in Temperature

The specific heat is the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature by one degree Celsius. The relationship between heat and temperature change is usually expressed in the form shown where C is the specific heat.
