The Moment of Inertia of Box Around the Center calculators computes the moment of inertia of a box of uniform density and mass M rotated about an axis perpendicular to one edge (c) and through the center of the perpendicular face (ab). 

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose the preferred units and enter the following:

  • (M) This is the mass of the box.
  • (a) This is the length of the face of the box.
  • (b) This is the height of the face of the box.

Moment of Inertial (MoI): The moment of inertia is returned in kg•m².

The Math / Science

The amount of torque needed to cause any given angular acceleration (the rate of change in angular velocity) is proportional to the moment of inertia of the body. 

The moment of inertia of a box of uniform density and mass M rotated about an axis perpendicular to one edge (c) and through the center of the perpendicular face (ab).
