The Total Bases calculator computes the total number of bases from the number of singles, doubles, triples and home runs.
INTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:
(S) Singles
(D) Doubles
(T) Triples
(HR) Home Runs
Total Bases (TB): The calculator returns the total number of bases.
The Math / Science
Hank Aaron is the all-time leader in total bases.
The Total Bases in baseball is the number of bases a player has gained with hits. It is a weighted sum for which the weight value is 1 for a single, 2 for a double, 3 for a triple and 4 for a home run. Only bases attained from hits count toward this total. Reaching base by other means (such as a base on balls) or advancing further after the hit (such as when a subsequent batter gets a hit) does not increase the player's total bases.
The formula for Total Bases is:
TB=(1⋅S)+(2⋅D)+(3⋅T)+(4⋅HR)
where:
TB = Total Bases
S = number of singles (hits on which the batter reaches first base without the contribution of a fielding error)
D = number of doubles (hits on which the batter reaches second base safely without the contribution of a fielding error)
T = number of triples (hits on which the batter reaches third base without the contribution of a fielding error)
HR = number of home runs (hits on which the batter successfully touched all four bases, without the contribution of a fielding error)
