This equation calculates the mass of an object from knowledge of the acceleration and mass of another object to which the same force has been applied.

This equation is based on Newton's Second Law of Motion, which describes that a net external force causes a body (mass) to accelerate and the realtionship between the force and the acceleration is stated as:

     F(net)=ma

And consequently if the force acting on two separate masses, m1 and m2, the following relationship must hold:

     m1a1=m2a2

Or rearranging mathematically:

     m2=m1a1a2
