The Hartmann number calculator computes the ratio of electromagnetic force to the viscous force.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (BMagnetic Field Intensity
  • (L) Characteristic Length
  • (σ) Electrical Conductivity
  • (μ) Dynamic Viscosity

Hartmann number (Ha): The calculator returns the ratio as a real number.

The Math / Science

The Hartmann Number equation is used to computes the ratio of electromagnetic force to the viscous force. The Hartmann Number equation is as follows:

Ha=BLσμ,

where:

  • Ha = Hartmann Number
  • B = magnetic field
  • L = characteristic length scale
  • σ = electrical conductivity
  • μ = dynamic viscosity

This ratio was developed by Julius Hartmann of Denmark.
