The Darcy-Weisbach equation is named after two of the great hydraulic engineers of the middle 19th century Henry Darcy and Julius Weisbach(1806-1871), but others have also played a major role. The Darcy–Weisbach equation contains a dimensionless friction factor, known as the Darcy friction factor. This is also called the Darcy–Weisbach friction factor or Moody friction factor.
 hl = fL/D * V2/2g

where:

  • hl is the head loss
  • L is the pipe length(m)
  • D is the pipe diameter(m)
  • V is the average velocity(m/s)
  • g is the acceleration of gravity(9.81 m/s2)
  • f is a friction factor.
