The Japanese Rice Measurements calculator converts weights in Japanese units used for measuring rice to modern (Western) weights such as kilograms based on conversion conventions in place since 1891.

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

  • Select Japanese Unit of Rice Weight
  • Enter the amount of the selected unit

Amount of Rice (AR): The calculator returns the equivalent amount in kilograms.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units  via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The units for measuring the weights of rice are as follows:

  • Shaku (勺) = 15g
  • (合) = 150g
  • Shō (升) = 1.5kg
  • To (斗) = 15kg
  • Hyō (俵) = 60kg
  • Koku (石) = 150kg

Further Notes

Other Japanese units of measurement, such as those used for volume, may share the same names as the units used for rice weight measurements. Furthermore, since the Japanese language contains many homonyms some units for measuring length, area, weight and mass, are romanized in the same manner as those above, but use different kanji (Chinese characters) to distinguish between them. One example is the Shaku, which when used to measure length is written with the character 尺.
