Pump Output - Quintuplex

The Quintuplex Pump Output  calculator computes the volumetric flow rate of a quintuplex pump based on the stroke length, pump cylinder diameter, stroke rate and the pump efficiency.

Pump Output (PO): The calculator returns the pump output in gallons per minute.  However this can be automatically converted to other volumetric flow units (e.g. barrels per minute) via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

Mud drilling pumps are reciprocating piston/plunger pumps designed to circulate drilling fluid under high pressure (up to 7,500 psi (52,000 kPa)) down the drill string and back up the annulus.  Mud pumps are commonly used for oil well drilling.  A quintuplex pump is a mud pump with five piston/plungers.  Quintuplex pumps tend to have lower mud noise factors while pumping.

The formula for the displacement volume of a cylinder in a pump is:

             V = π•(D/2)²•L

where:

• V is the volume displaced in one stroke of the pump
• D is the inner diameter of the pump cylinder
• L is the pump cylinder stroke length

With the volume of a single stroke and with the knowledge that quintuplex pump has five piston/plungers, the calculator computes the volume of a single stroke cycle.  It then uses the stroke rate to compute the volume of flow per unit of time (e.g. barrels per day).  The default return units are gallons per minute.  However, vCalc provides automatic conversions to numerous compatible units.
