Mass Sum

The Sum of Masses calculator computes the sum of two weights or masses.

INSTRUCTION: Choose units and enter the following:

• (M1) Mass or Weight of Item 1.
• (M2) Mass or Weight of Item 2.

Sum of Masses (ΣM):   The sum in mass is returned in kilograms (kg).  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The difference between masses is a simple calculation of the following formula:

    ΣM = M1 + M2

where:

• ΣM = Sum of Masses or Weights
• M1 = Mass or Weight of first object
• M2 = Mass or Weight of second object

The real power of this calculator lies in the ability to switch between units of the input masses and the resulting mass automatically.   Note, the conversion between mass and weight is only scientifically sound if you presume a consistent force of gravity on the surface of the Earth.  Otherwise, one pound does not consistently convert to a number of kilograms.
