The Garden Stone for Polygon Area calculator computes the cubic feet and number of units (e.g., bags) of garden stone needed for a polygon shape area (e.g., pentagon, octagon).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (s) Side Length
  • (n) Number of Sides to Polygon
  • (d) Depth of Stone
  • (BV) Volume per Unit
    • Bags: 0.4 ft3, 0.5 ft3, 1.0 ft3
    • Bulk: 0.5 yd3, 1.0 yd

Number of Units of Stone (nB): The calculator returns the number of units of stone and the volume of stone in cubic feet.

The Math / Science

A regular polygon has all the same lengths for each side and all the same angles between the side.   The calculator compute the volume of garden stone to cover the area at the desired depth (d).  It then computes the number of bags needed.

Garden Stone Information

When purchasing river stone or other types of landscaping stone, the most common units and delivery sizes are:

  • Cubic Yards: This is the standard unit for measuring bulk landscaping materials like river stone. One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet.
  • Tons: Some suppliers sell stone by weight. One ton of river stone typically covers about 80-100 square feet at a 2-inch depth, depending on the size of the stone.

Common Delivery Sizes:

  • Half Yard to Full Yard: Smaller residential projects often order in increments of half or full cubic yards.
  • 1-10 Tons: Larger landscaping projects might require multiple tons, and many suppliers deliver in truckloads of around 1 to 10 tons, depending on the customer’s needs.
  • Bags: For smaller projects, river stone may be sold in bags, typically around 0.5 to 1 cubic foot per bag.

Stone Sizes:

  • Pea Gravel: 1/4" to 3/8"
  • Small River Stone: 3/4" to 1 1/2"
  • Medium River Stone: 1 1/2" to 2 1/2"
  • Large River Stone: 3" to 5" or larger

Garden stone is available in most DIY stores such as Home Depot, Menards and Lowes.  Because stone is heavy, these garden stone products often comes in relatively small bags of differing volumes such as:

  • 0.4 cubic feet
  • 0.5 cubic feet
  • 1.0 cubic feet

The size of the stones usually range from pea sized to river stones that are about the size of grapefruits.
