The Hooke's Law (plane stress y component) calculator computes the y component of strain in a three dimensional plan case of Hooke's Law.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (σx) x-component of the stress
  • (σy) y-component of the stress
  • (E) Modulus of Elasticity
  • (latS) Lateral Strain
  • (lonS) Longitudinal Strain

Hooke's Law (plane stress y component):   The calculator returns the strain.

The Math / Science

This equation computes the y component of the strain, εy in the three dimensional plane stress (σz = 0) case of Hooke's Law.

The reciprocal term of the equation is 1/E where E is the modulus of elasticity (Young's Modulus) .

ν is Poisson's ratio = - (lateral strain / longitudinal strain)

σx, σy are the x and y components respectively of the plane stress
