The concept of relativistic mass mrelativistic as a function of velocity can be directly derived from Einstein's theory of mass–energy equivalence.
The mass we discuss in these terms has an invariant attribute we refer to as "rest mass" and "rest mass" is defined to be the same for all observers in all reference frames. The mrelativistic is a function computed by this equation which is a function of the mass's velocity.
Relativistic mass can be expressed as:
mrelativistic= , where
So, since the denominator under the square root goes to zero as the velocity approaches the speed of light, the mass goes to infinity at the speed of light -- which is the definition of the velocity being restricted to always be less than the speed of light.
