INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • n - the number of sides of the regular polygon
  • s - the length of a side of the polygon
  • h - height of the polygon column

Surface Area of the Column(SA): The surface area of the column is returned in square meters.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for the surface area of a column with base and top of a regular polygon is:

   SA=2⋅(1/4⋅n⋅ s2⋅cot(π/n)) + (n⋅s⋅h)

where:

  • SA = Surface area of polygon volume
  • n = number of sides of the polygon
  • s = uniform length of the sides of the polygon (i.e. regular polygon)
  • h = height of the polygon shape
