The Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) formula computes the total up-time over some given period. The MTBF is the estimated time between inherent failures of a system during operation. the MTBF assumes after each failure the system is immediately repaired. MTBF is identical to Mean Time To Repair (MTTRT) for a system that cannot be repaired. We usually use MTTR to compute the time averaged over some number of failed system data points to estimate MTTR.
