The Shingles for a Shed Roof calculator computes the total number of 33.3 ft2 bundles of shingles needed to cover a single sloped roof based on the span, ridge length and the front and back overhangs.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (L) Ridge Length (include rakes)
  • (S) Span
  • (P) Pitch (choose: 2/12,3/12,4/12,5/12,6/12,7/12,8/12,9/12,10/12,12/12,14/12)
  • (oH) Overhang (default: 12")
  • (MoE) Margin of Error (added to the calculated Truss Length)

Shingles for Shed Roof (TL): The calculator returns the number of 33.3 ft2 shingle bundles for the roof, and the number of roofing nails for both normal and high wind conditions (see below).  The calculator also returns the square feet of the roof.

The Math / Science

A Shed Roof is a roof with a single slope (see picture).  Shed Roofs are used in simple agriculture buildings and state of the art modern buildings.  The Shingles for a Shed Roof calculator is meant to help with material estimates for a roof.  The rafter length uses the pitch (rise over run) and the span, which is the width plus the two overhangs (front and back).  This algorithm also accounts for a double row of shingle on the bottom drip edge.

The number of roofing nails is based on the two factors, one for normal wind conditions and one for high wind conditions.  For normal wind, the algorithm uses 348 nails per 100 ft2 based on the nailing patter shown below. For high wind conditions, the algorithm uses 522 nails per 100 ft2 based on the nailing pattern below.

In all cases, confirm your estimates with a professional estimate and adhering to local building codes.

Single Price Survey Data

The Roofing Shingles Cost Survey list the observed price of a bundle of shingles. A bundle is equal to roughly (33 1/3 ft2) or one third of a roofing square (100 ft2). The survey includes a date, the name of the store, and the five price points for shingles: economy, low, median, high and premium.

One  should use the pricing for roofing materials that can be bought locally.  However, the following prices are for different quality grades of shingles in the United States:

All prices are for one bundle of shingles which cover 33.33 ft2
