The Bags of Dirt for Bed calculator computes the number of bags of soil (potting mix, garden soil) to fill a bed.diagram of bed above and below ground

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (AGHeight Above Ground
  • (BG) Depth Below Ground
  • (LBed Length
  • (W) Bed Width
  • (BS) Volume of Soil per Bag

Bags of Dirt for Bed ( nB ): The results are returns the number of bags to fill it and the total volume in cubid feet.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Bags of Dirt for Bed equation computes the total number of bags of soil needed to fill a raised planting bed.

The equation inputs are as follows:

  • length and width of the bed
  • depth of bed below ground level
  • height of bed above ground level (this may be zero inches)

Bag Sizes are typical purchased in bags of half-cubic feet increments.  So, you will typically find bags of 0.5 (half cubic foot), 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, etc.
