This equation computes the range at which the rays from an antenna can be treated as parallel, the Fraunhofer distance, RF

INPUTS

The antenna dimension and the radar wavelength are input as follows:

  • λ - wavelength of radar wave
  • ω - antenna diameters

NOTES

This far field range is also called the Fraunhofer region and defines the range at which the far region begins and where electromagnetic radiation from the radar source exhibits the dominant characteristics of electromagnetic fields (as opposed to the near field range in which the waveforms exhibit a non-radiative behaviors.

This equation is best suited for antennas that are larger than half the wavelength of the radiation emitted:

RF >> ω

RF >> λ
