The Arithmetic Mean Temperature Difference calculator compute the mean temperature difference based on the temperatures of the primary and secondary inlets and outlets of a system.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (Pin) Primary Inlet Temperature
  • (Pout) Primary Outlet Temperature
  • (Sin) Secondary Inlet Temperature
  • (Sout) Secondary Outlet Temperature

Arithmetic Mean Temperature Difference (AMTD): The calculator returns the mean in degrees Celsius.  However, however this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for the Arithmetic Mean Temperature Difference is:

AMTD = (Pin + Pout)/2 - (Sin-Sout)/2

where:

  • AMTD = Arithmetic Mean Temperature Difference
  • Pin = Primary Inlet Temperature
  • Pout = Primary Outlet Temperature
  • Sin = Secondary Inlet Temperature
  • Sout = Secondary Outlet Temperature
