The Body Surface Area Averaged calculator computes the body surface area of the human body based on the person's weight (w) and height (h) using the average of the nine most common formula (see below).
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
- (w) Weight of the person.
- (h) Height of the person.
Body Surface Area (BSA): The area is returned in square meters (m²) and square feet (ft2). However, these can be automatically converted into other area units via the pull-down menu.
The Math / Science
There are several common formulae for human body surface area
The Mosteller formula is as follows;
BSA=√h⋅w3600
The Gehan and George body surface area equation is as follows:
BSA = 0.0235 * h0.42246 * w0.51456
The Boyd body surface area formula is as follows:
BSA= 0.03330⋅w0.6157−0.0188⋅log10(w)⋅h0.3
The Haycock formula is as follows:
BSA = 0.024265 * h0.3964 * w0.5378
The Fujimoto formula is as follows:
BSA = 0.008883* h0.663* w0.444
The Takahira formula is as follows:
BSA = 0.007241* h0.725* w0.425
The Wang Hihara formula is as follows:
BSA=√w⋅h3537
The vCalc Average BSA is the mean of the above formula.
BSA is used in physiology and medicine. The default input units are centimeters (cm) for height and kilograms (kg) for weight, and meters squared (m2). However, the calculator provides automatic conversions for both the inputs and outputs to other (e.g. English) units via the pull-down menus. To change to English units, click on the button at the right side of the height(h) input field with cm and scroll down to another unit such as inches. You can then enter the height in inches and the conversion will be made for you. You can do the same for weight (w) by clicking on the kg field and scroll down to pounds. Again the conversion will be made for you.
