Weight of Volume

vCalc Reviewed
`w = "V" * "mD" `
`(V) "volume"`
`(mD) "mean density"`

The Weight of a Volume calculator computes the weight or mass of a volume (V) of material based on its mean density (mD)

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (V) Volume of Material (e.g. 2.2 cubic yards of sand)
  • (mD) Mean density of Material.  (See below)

weight (w): The calculator returns the weight (mass) in kilograms.  However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

This formula accepts the volume in a large set of solid and liquid units.  With the volume, this formula then executes the simple equation below to compute the approximate mass of the object.

m = mD * v

where:

  • m is the mass, which can be converted to weight.
  • mD is the mean density of the material
  • v is the volume of material.
Mean Density

The mean density (average density) of many materials have been measured and can be used in formulas like this.   The mean density (mD) of hundreds common substances, elements, liquids and materials can be found by CLICKING HERE.
