Horsepower (hp) is unit of measurement of power, the rate at which work is done. If belt tension and belt velocity are known - horsepower transferred can be calculated.  The formula for the belt transfer horsepower is:

  hp = bv•bt / 33000          

    where:

•  hp = belt transfer power
•  bt = belt tension in pounds force.
•  bv = velocity of belt in feet per minute.
