Solvolysis is the reaction of a substance with the solvent in which it is dissolved. The solvolysis reaction we will consider in this chapter occur in aqueous solutions, so they are called hydrolysis reactions. Hydrolysis is the reaction of a substance with water. In dilute solutions, strong acids and strong bases are completely ionized or dissociated. In the following section, we consider dilute aqueous solutions of slats. Based on our classification of acids and bases, we can identify four different kinds of salts.
