The Larmor Formula calculator computes the power radiated by point charge as it accelerates based on the charge and the acceleration.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (q) Charge
  • (a) Acceleration

Power (P): The power is returned in watts. However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Larmor Formula is used to calculate the total power radiated by a  non relativistic point charge as it accelerates or decelerates. When any charged particle (such as an electron, a proton, or an ion) accelerates, it radiates away energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. For velocities that are small relative to the speed of light, the total power radiated is given by the Larmor formula:

 P=q2a26πε0c3

where:

  • P = Power
  • q = charge
  • a = acceleration
  • ε0 = electric constant
  • c = speed of light
