The Luminous Exposure calculator computes the luminous exposure based on the illuminance of the surface and the time of exposure.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (Ev)  This  is the illuminance of the surface area
  • (t) This is the  duration of the exposure

Luminous Exposure (Hv):  The calculator returns the exposure in lux·seconds.

The Math / Science

The Luminous Exposure in photography is the amount of light per unit area reaching a photographic film or electronic image sensor, as determined by shutter speed, lens aperture and scene luminance. Exposure is measure in lux seconds, and can be computed from exposure value and scene luminance in a specified region.

The formula for luminous exposure is:

                Hv=Ev•t

where:

  • Hv = luminous exposure (v is for visual)
  • Ev = illuminance of the surface
  • t = exposure duration
