Hemisphere (Surface Area)

The Surface Area of a Hemisphere calculator computes the surface area (A) of a hemisphere based on the radius.   A Hemisphere   This includes the circular base.

The Math / Science

The equation for the surface area of hemisphere is the addition of two formulas:

1. Surface area of a sphere:   A = 4 • π • r², and 
2. Area of a circle for the flat base:       A = π • r²

Since it is a hemisphere, the area of the spherical portion is half of the surface area of a sphere:  A = 1/2  • 4 • π • r², which simplifies to  A =2 • π • r².

Adding the two together:   A = 2 • π • r² +  π • r², the formula for the surface area of a hemisphere is:   

A = 3 • π • r²

Where:

• A = Surface Area of Hemisphere
• r = Radius of the hemisphere

A hemisphere is half of a sphere. The boundary is a great circle that goes through the center of the sphere.
