The Brzycki Max Weight calculator computes the approximate maximum weight one can lift using the Brzycki formula.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (w) Weight Lifted in Repetitions.
  • (r) Number of reps.

Max Weight (1RM):  The calculator returns the approximate one rep max weight in pounds.  However, this can be automatically converted to other mass or weight units (e.g. kilograms) via the pull-down menu.

Math / Science

The Bryzycki formula is:

          1RM=w(3637-r)

where:

  • 1RM is the one rep maximum for the weight lifter.
  • w is the weight lifted in multiple reps.
  • r is the number of reps lifting the weight.

Max Repetition Weight formulas like Bryzycki are intended to provide an estimate on the maximum weight one can lift without having to attempt such a lift.  The max one rep weight is estimated based on the total number of reps lifted of a weight less than the weightlifter's established maximum. The motivation is to avoid injuries associated with lifting one's max.
