The Floor Area of a Room with a Squared Bump-out calculator computes the floor area of a rectangular room with a squared (rectangular) bump-out based on the length and width of the room and bump-out.

INSTRUCTIONS:  Choose units and enter the following:

  • (L) Length of Room
  • (W) Width of Room
  • (BW) Bump-out Width
  • (BD) Bump-out Depth

Total Floor Area (TA):  The calculator returns the total area in square feet.   However, this can be automatically converted compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for the area of a rectangular room with a squared bump-out is:

A = L ⋅ W + BD⋅BW

where:

  • A = Floor Area of Room with Squared Bump-out
  • L = Length of Main Room
  • W = Width of Main Room
  • BW = Width of Bump-out
  • BD = Depth of Bump-out

Room Floor Area Calculators

Most rooms are  simple rectangles with a length and a width.  The only common departure are rooms with bump-outs.  Some bump-outs are angular and taper down from an opening.  Some bump-outs have squared corners.  To compute the square feet of these floors are simple geometry based on the measurements of the main floor and the bump-out dimensions.

To compute the area of a floor with a different shape (e.g., circular, oval, or polygon), see the Area Calculator.
