Tile Price Comparison (TPC): The calculator returns which option is the better value and by what percent.  It also returns the dollars per square feet for the better option.

The Math / Science

The calculator computes the total area for each tile or container of tiles, converts the price for each box into a single currency if they are not already (U.S. dollars).  It then makes a comparison and returns the percent savings one tile represents over the other.  Irregular tile, those in various shapes, are typically sold in sets of patterns that interconnect.  They are sold in units that indicate area coverage of one set.

Tile can come in many forms including ceramic and porcelain tile, carpet tile, and linoleum (vinyl) tile which are used in many homes and businesses and readily available that many big-box DIY stores. Refer to the TILE Category for a more detailed definition of Tile.

Tile Price Survey Data

Price Point Descriptions

1. Premium -  This is the highest cost per unit surveyed.
2. High - This is the 75 percentile of surveyed costs.
3. Mid - This is the median of surveyed costs.
4. Low - This is the 25 percentile of surveyed costs.
5. Economy - This is the lowest cost per unit surveyed.
6. n - This is the sample size of the survey (number of products in the survey).

The above prices are for different flooring materials and price points in the United States as advertised on the date indicated by a large big-box DIY retailer on their public website.  A retailer is surveyed and the number of products included in the survey is listed. Survey sample is typically not the complete product line of the retailer.  This is purely for convenience of calculator users to make a rough estimate. Sample pricing is entered into Price Survey Tools to generate the statistics found above.
