The Max Static Friction Force calculator computes the maximum force boundary between the Normal force and the friction force.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (μs) Static force coefficient
  • (FN) Normal Force

Max Static Friction Force (Fs max):The calculator return the max static friction force in newtons.  However, this can be automatically converted to other force units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

Static friction occurs between surfaces that are not slipping over each other. Slipping surfaces experience kinetic friction.

The formula for max static friction is:

Fs max = μs⋅ FN
