Hardwood Flooring Nails Needed (nN): The calculator returns the number of nails needed and the number of boxes of nails.
The most common nails used when installing hardwood flooring are L shaped cleat nails that are barbed and come in boxes containing sleeves of nails that are placed in a flooring nailer in a way not unlike staples in a stapler. They are usually between an 1 1/4" and 2" long, and are sold in boxes containing either 1,000 or 2,000 nails. Most hardwood flooring is either 3" wide or 5 3/8" wide. This calculator estimates the linear feet of boards required for the area specified and then estimates the number of nails based on an industry specification of one nail every 8".
