The Side Length of a Polygon Slab calculator computes the length of the sides of a polygon slab./attachments/1234b1c3-2871-11e3-8029-bc764e049c3d/polygonslabSideLength-illustration.png

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (r) Radius of Circle Around Polygon's Vertices
  • (n) Number of Sides of Polygon (i.e., n = 5 for a pentagon, n = 6 for a hexagon, n = 8 for an octagon, etc)

Side Length (s): The calculator returns the length of the individual sides (s) and the sum of the sides (TL) of the polygon in feet and inches.  However, the length can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

A regular polygon has sides of equal length and equal angles.  So, for instance, a regular hexagon has six sides of the same lengths.  This function provide the length of the individual side of a regular polygon.

A regular polygon has all its sides of equal length.  So, for instance, a regular hexagon has six sides of the same lengths.

The length of the sides are computed in the same units as the radius (e.g. enter the radius in feet, and the side length will be in feet).

Usage

This equation is used to compute the length of the sides of a concrete slab that is being poured in a regular polygon shape.  This length would tell you how long to cut the retaining members (form boards) to create the polygon. Remember that the mitered corner extends beyond the polygon slab's vertices and this length of the polygon side is the inner dimension to the point of the joint touching the slab.  So, to accommodate the mitered corner, you have to make the retaining members slightly longer and cut the angle of the joint at the length defined by this equation.

This could be used to determine the length of the sides of a polygon created in wood, as well as in concrete, so this equation applies to Carpentry as well.
