This Surface Area of a Polygon Based Column calculator computes the mass or weight of a column where the base is the area of a regular polygon with (n) equal sides of length (s), the height (h) of the column, and mean density of the substance of the column.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
n - the number of sides of the regular polygon
s - the length of a side of the polygon
h - height of the polygon column
Surface Area of the Column(SA): The surface area of the column is returned in square meters. However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.
The Math / Science
The formula for the surface area of a column with base and top of a regular polygon is:
SA=2⋅(1/4⋅n⋅ s2⋅cot(π/n)) + (n⋅s⋅h)
where:
SA = Surface area of polygon volume
n = number of sides of the polygon
s = uniform length of the sides of the polygon (i.e. regular polygon)
